Matt’s career with the Sheriff’s Office began in 1999 when he was hired as a Correctional Officer and assigned to the South Jail. In 2001, Matt became a Deputy Sheriff and graduated from the Modesto Police Academy. Upon graduation, Matt was assigned to the Patrol Division and worked on various Patrol teams to include Lathrop Police Services.

In 2005, Matt became a Detective assigned to Lathrop Police Services. While working as a Detective, Matt investigated a significant number of cases, which ranged from property crimes to homicides.

In 2008, Matt was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. As a Sergeant, Matt supervised several different Patrol Teams, worked in the Case Management Unit, and oversaw the Department Defensive Tactics Program.

Matt was a member of the Department’s SWAT Team from 2003 to 2012. He made entries during the service of high-risk search warrants, was involved in SWAT responses to barricaded subjects and potential hostage situations, competed in Advanced SWAT competitions, was a Team Leader, and SWAT Commander on pre-planned and suspect initiated events. Matt was also in charge of the Sniper Observer Team.

In 2012, Matt was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to the Patrol Division as the Administrative Lieutenant. Matt’s responsibilities included oversight and management of the STARS program, the Case Management Unit, the Crime Analysis Unit, the Mobile Law Enforcement Center, the Court Liaison, and the Boating Safety Unit. Matt was the Law Enforcement Mutual Aid and Search and Rescue Coordinator for San Joaquin County and liaison to the Office of Emergency Services. He was responsible for overseeing and maintaining the vehicle fleet, equipment, MOU’s, grants, the DRMO program, the budget for the Patrol Division, training newly promoted Sergeants, and maintaining the Master Schedule for Patrol Division. In 2016, Matt was promoted to the rank of Captain and had command of the Professional Standards Division before being transferred to take command of the Patrol Division.

In January of 2019, Matt was promoted to Assistant Sheriff of Operations where he oversaw the Patrol Division and the Investigations Division. Matt was promoted to Undersheriff in April of 2020.

Matt graduated from Sacramento State University in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice where he also played for the university football team. He has obtained a graduate certificate from the University of Virginia, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session 265 in Quantico Virginia, has obtained an Executive Development POST Certificate, and is a graduate of POST Command College Session 65.

Matt is a prior advisor for the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program and is a prior Board Member for the United Way of San Joaquin County. Prior to working for the Sheriff’s Office, Matt was employed by the Sacramento County Probation Department.

Matt has been awarded the Mayor’s Medal of Distinction Award, City of Lathrop; Americas Most Wanted Heroes Award, National Nominee; S.W.A.T. Officer of the Year; Officer of the Year, San Joaquin County, Italian Athletic Club; and, Top Cadet Award, Modesto Police Academy.
